SOUND & VISION

The Art Department Eindhoven 2024

Sound & Vision is one of the largest audiovisual archives of Europe, and they’ll bring a small sliver of their treasures to The Art Department for you to play with. Join them and impart a character from your imagination into past imagery from the archive to win a prize!

Sound & Vision will be present on both days with their own stand where you can start creating on the spot.

At The Art Department, Sound & Vision will provide a free sample pack of specially curated content from their archive, embodying the wide variety of analogue and pre-digital heritage that was forged in the past. A true treasure trove of old industrial imagery, open seas, stylistic mechanical visuals and quirky, unexpected footage of nature: we can assure you, it’s not what you expect.

Taking these images as a starting point, you’re challenged to create your own character design, placing them into these long forgotten worlds. Especially for this year’s The Art Department, the competition will zoom in on the theme Dark Fantasy, emphasizing the fantastical and eerie ambience hidden within the footage.

At the stand we’ll provide a number of WACOM-tablets to start creating right away. Meanwhile, the Sound & Vision crew will be happy to tell you all the ins-and-outs of reusing archival material. Discover all the possibilities of creative reuse; there is a whole world waiting for you.

How to join the competition?

That’s simple:

  • Stop by the stand and say hello.
  • Check out the sample pack and start creating on the spot.
  • Make sure to leave your name and info behind.
  • Post your work on Instagram before 28 April, and tag Playgrounds (@weareplaygrounds) and Sound & Vision (@beeldgeluid).
