An inspiring Q&A session with three cinematographers, sharing their unique perspectives on the craft. Using carefully selected footage, we will explore their favorite shots, techniques, and personal stories from behind the camera. This program is curated and hosted by BROET in tight collaboration with Playgrounds.
Joining us is Jean Counet, an Amsterdam-based cinematographer and film director. Born in Eindhoven, Netherlands, he studied film at the Sint Lukas Institute in Brussels. Counet is known for his intuitive and poetic filming style, often capturing authentic moments in challenging environments worldwide. He has worked on documentaries, feature films, and cross-media projects, winning several awards for his work. As a member of the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers, Counet continues to contribute to the film industry with his visually compelling narratives. Among the films he has worked for are Kunstroof, Niemand die het ziet, Klassen, If The Sun Explodes and A Way To B.
With a passion for images, Karlijn Milder, brings stories to life on screen as a cinematographer working across fiction, documentary, music videos, and commercial projects. Her work has been showcased on platforms such as NPO, Netflix, EYE Filmmuseum, and Pinewood Studios in London. She won the Best Cinematographer Award at the Close-up Reykjavik Film Festival for the short film One, no one, 100.000 and recently shot the short fiction films Scarecrow, Metrics of Consolation, and the international period piece Fanny. For Fanny, she and the crew received support from ARRI as part of an emerging filmmakers initiative. Together with her sister Lotte, Karlijn forms the directing duo Milder Sisters, bringing untold, mostly female-driven stories to the screen. Their projects include the mid-length film Fanny and the upcoming feature film Maskerade, which further expands its story.
Also joining us is Amsterdam based cinematographer Raf Lormans. In 2023, he graduated from the Dutch Academy for Visual Creation, specialising in cinematography. As an emerging Director of Photography, he is developing a unique style in which he approaches fiction with a documentary perspective, allowing space for the unexpected. He believes that beauty lies in the uncontrollable, resulting in an authentic and naturalistic visual style. Despite his young career, Raf has worked on both fiction and documentary projects, earning multiple national and international nominations. The film Super Duper Mega Fan, in which he was involved as a DOP, is part of our Student Film Competition. Raf’s work ranges from fiction and documentaries to commercials and music videos, always maintaining a personal and observant style.
Together, we’ll dive into the art and craftsmanship of cinematography. Get your questions ready because audience members will also have the opportunity to pick the brains of the guests.
