DERMOT POWER

PLAYGROUNDS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Dermot Power is a renowned concept artist and illustrator with a career spanning decades in the film industry. After starting his artistic journey as a comic book artist on the legendary 2000 AD series, Power transitioned to the world of film, where his creative vision has left an indelible mark.

Power’s big break in the movie world came in 1999 when Doug Chiang invited him to join the Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones art department, working on characters and costumes under the mentorship of Iain McCaig, who instilled in him the importance of storytelling in design. This marked the start of a remarkable career spanning some of the most iconic franchises in film history.

In 2001, Power collaborated with legendary production designer Stuart Craig on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, continuing with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and briefly on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. His work expanded to include Batman Begins and Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, followed by V for Vendetta in Berlin and a three-year stint with Doug Chiang’s Ice Blink Studios in San Francisco, contributing to Beowulf and A Christmas Carol.

Power’s creative partnership with Tim Burton flourished, resulting in contributions to Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Dumbo, and a memorable nine-month development period for Burton’s Pinocchio. In 2013, he returned to Star Wars for The Force Awakens, focusing on costume design, and revisited the Wizarding World with Stuart Craig for the Fantastic Beasts series.

To mark the 20 years anniversary from the premiere of V for Vendetta we are screening the film during the Playgrounds International Film Festival and have invited Dermot Power to share some insights about working on the film as a concept artist.

On Wednesday 19 March make sure you don’t miss this special screening! Get your TICKETS here.
