MAKING MAGIC ON A BUDGET

PLAYGROUNDS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

1 hour | artist talk

TICKETS:

Friday, 21 March, 11.00 – 12.00 | Film Industry Day

In “Making Magic on a Budget” the Fabel Film duo will explore how combining practical and digital effects can create compelling visuals, even with limited resources. Through various examples from their film, they demonstrate how the marriage of in-camera effects and VFX enabled actors to interact with supernatural elements, enhancing both performances and the final result. From simple techniques like augmenting a single practical light with digital effects, to more complex sequences involving seamless transitions between physical and digital elements, the presentation breaks down their hybrid approach to achieving movie magic.

Bio
Fabel Film is a Tilburg-based production company where passionate filmmakers with a broad scope create projects ranging from award-winning commercials and campaigns to films shown at international festivals. Whether it concerns profound documentaries or light-hearted, humorous content, they approach every project with the same dedication and craftsmanship. They believe that film is a powerful medium to allow a wide range of voices to be heard and provide an authentic reflection of society. Their portfolio includes clients like de Efteling, Rabobank, Beekse Bergen & ESPN.

Creative force behind the company are Justus van den Elsen and Job van Etten. Van den Elsen, co-owner and filmmaker, was selected for Playgrounds Next Talent Hub, Next x Netflix Writers Room, and Filmfonds Cypher. His folk horror short De Gloeiige  screened at several international festivals.

Van Etten, who studied at Willem I College, leads Fabel’s visual effects department where he shapes the studio’s distinct style. Their collaboration on Behind the Door, a magical realist youth film, showcases their complementary strengths – van den Elsen’s storytelling prowess combined with van Etten’s technical and creative mastery of visual effects.
