Documentary maker and editor Festus Toll uses archival materials in his work. His documentaries give a new voice those these materials and re-tell sensitive topics in our history. He will talk about the way he works with archival footage.
Festus Toll’s work confronts moral dilemmas and identity with a powerful social urgency. In his short documentary The Story of Ne Kuko, he explores the journey of a stolen Congo power statue—an nkisi brought to life by an ancestral voice—selected for IDFA and nominated for a Gouden Kalf. In The Black Pete Files, Toll examines the evolution of Black Pete from cherished helper to divisive symbol, using archival footage to reveal its controversial history. Commissioned by Playgrounds and Sound & Vision, this film essay premiered at Playgrounds In Motion 2023 and featured at Movies That Matter and Generation Inclusion.
Join his session at Playgrounds Film Festival and experience storytelling that challenges, inspires, and transforms.
