We’ve all come to know Simon Buijs a bit so it should not be a surprise that his latest Playgrounds Eye Candy pick features again some very cutting-edge creators, redefining the digital spectre. Meet YONK, 3D animation and illustration duo based in The Hague.
Simon “What I really like about Yonk is that they have a very playful way of using new techniques to create weird and wonderful characters and stories.” Created by Niels van der Donk and Victoria Louise Young, the studio creates unconventional bubbly weir-dish imagery all on Oculus Rift, for all the forward thinking minds out there to enjoy.
When describing their strategy, the duo says: “We pride ourselves on making maximalist, strange and damn right weird character design and animations, all created within the confines of virtual reality.”
In an It’s Nice That interview, Victoria elaborates “At first sight Yonk is a 3D animation and image studio, but I like to think Yonk doesn’t just sit into that set creative practice, it is very much an expression of myself and Niels as people. Whatever is new, fun and exciting we want to be associated with. At this moment in time, it is using Oculus Medium to create our work but we are working many self-initiated projects that use different mediums and practices. We want Yonk to be as intuitive and spontaneous as we are.”
