Next Real Talks: COMEDY IN FILM

Next Real Talks brings creatives together for open conversations about the realities of creative life — with insights in a work process both the struggles and success. In an intimate and interactive setting, we create space for honest dialogue, listening, and picking each other’s brains.

During this talk we explore the power of comedy in film, shining a light on a genre that continues to evolve across both mainstream and independent cinema. But how do you craft humor that resonates, on a tight budget? What themes and perspectives shape comedic storytelling? And how do you translate timing, tone, and absurdity from script to screen? This session examines what it takes to work within the genre, the challenges of making people laugh, and why comedy remains such a vital reflection of contemporary culture.

The moderated panel brings together filmmakers and comedians at different stages of their careers, offering insight into the creative process behind bringing humor to life on screen.

We will welcome actress and host Lonne Gosling, actor and composer Joep Vermolen, and filmmaker Jochem de Vet. The audience is most welcome to interact and ask questions.

As this talk focuses on comedy—where language, nuance, and timing play a crucial role—it will be conducted in Dutch to fully capture and appreciate the humor.

Lonne Gosling (Helmond, 1985) is an actor, presenter and theatre maker.
Since graduating from the Academy of Theatre, she has performed for companies including Theater Oortwolk, Cie Perelman, Afslag Eindhoven and De Kwekerij.

Lonne also makes films and productions with Twan van Bragt:
Drawing on their shared fascination with the anti-hero and human inadequacy, they create work that is uncomfortable, dry and comforting. They operate at the intersection of theatre and film. They previously created the one-woman show ‘Misschien moet ik zelf huilen’, the web series Life of Gemma, a tragicomic series about a socially awkward vocational MBO teacher. They are currently working on ‘Morgen Weer Een Dag’ (premiere February ’27).

Joep Vermolen is the co-creator and lead actor of the awkward Netflix comedy series TOON and, together with friends, created the web series 1000% Succesvol Succes in collaboration with De Speld. He currently creates sketches about awkward dates on the Instagram channel NOU WAS LEUK and is performing his first cabaret show, NOU WAS LEUK / SO THIS WAS NICE, in Dutch and English.
