The Art Department Eindhoven 2024

Art is an intrinsic need and the main purpose for many creators. Yet, the need to create is often also influenced by outside factors. Be it the economic impact on professional artists or A.I., there are many reasons to wonder about what drives us and what might keep us going for the years to come.

Join Crash, Karla Ortiz, Wouter Tulp alongside host Spiridon Giannakis for a panel discussion about how to keep on creating even when tackling challenging times.

Crash McCreery is an Academy Award nominated creature designer, production designer, visual consultant, and illustrator who has created iconic characters for the original Jurassic Park and its two sequels, the first three Pirates of the Caribbean, A.I. and many other blockbuster feature films.

Karla Ortiz is a Puerto Rican, internationally recognized award-winning artist. With her exceptional design sense, realistic renders, and character-driven narratives, Karla has contributed to many big-budget films as a concept artist, including Jurassic World, World of Warcraft, Rogue One: A Starwars Story, Marvel’s Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther, Infinity Wars, and most notably her design of Doctor Strange for Marvel’s Doctor Strange.

Wouter Tulp is a Dutch versatile character designer for feature animation that has worked for studios such as Sony Pictures Animation, Paramount Pictures Animation, Netflix, Skydance and many more. He has illustrated over a hundred children’s books, as well as caricatures and editorial illustrations in high-circulation newspapers and magazines.

The discussion is going to be moderated by longtime Playgrounds friend, creative consultant, art book designer and publisher Spiridon Giannakis. He has been working in print media since 2006. Starting in 2017 he has helped artists, like Even Mehl Amundsen, Abigail Larson, Bjorn Hurri, Bastien Deharme, and many more, to publish their art books managing their crowdfunding campaigns. His latest project is Convoloot, a platform entirely focused on conversations and interviews with industry professionals and community leaders.
