PERIOD DRAMA ON A BUDGET

PLAYGROUNDS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2026

This program is part of the Film & Talent Industry Day. Explore the full program here.

Harpy Film’s producer Charlotte Driessen shares insights into producing a period piece on limited means, reflecting on the balance between traditional and unconventional approaches to filmmaking.

Charlotte graduated in 2014 with a degree in International Media & Entertainment Management in Breda. During and after her studies, she spent seven years working as a freelancer on her own projects as well as for others. She also produced the International Documentary Festival DOCfeed for several years and taught film classes to film students and underprivileged youth. Charlotte worked on various feature films in collaboration with established film producers.

In 2021, she founded Harpy Films, a film production company focused on national and, particularly, international films and other content. The company aims to shine a light on those who dare to be different, inspire people to change their perspectives, and make a difference.

During this talk Charlotte will share insights about creating the 30-minute period piece Fanny together with the Milder Sisters. The film focusses on the ambitious hairdresser Fanny who must survive within the demanding world of the Viennese court. When she pays no mind to the existing rules and moralities of the time, she draws the unexpected attention of the Empress, as well as a public audience.
The team shot the film on a low budget in a palace in Hungary, an old theatre in Belgium and an old castle (in renovation) in the Netherlands. In the talk Charlotte will focus on the process of creating a period piece film on a low budget and the traditional vs. non-traditional approach of filmmaking.
