MARLIES VAN DER WEL

animation director

Her latest short ‘Emily’ was the Dutch submission for the Academy Awards 2019. She uses big themes in small packages; she tells very emotional, universal and also light-hearted stories with simple images and words. All with a healthy dose of humor. Dutch talent and animation director Marlies van der Wel is simply bound to to reach great heights!

Van der Wel’s short films have been recognized internationally at prestigious festival such as Berlinale, Toronto Film Festival and Sundance. Her award winning shorts ‘Jonas and the Sea’ and ‘Sabaku’ were both the result of a collage process in which she weaves drawings, textures and random objects together. Her visual language expresses itself in detailed animations with minimal but natural movement. ‘Jonas and the sea’ was turned into a book in 2017, and her latest short ‘Emily’ was the Dutch submission for the Academy Awards 2019.

Marlies van der Wel has also been featured as part of our Playgrounds Eye Candy series.

Following a fully packed (as in: no place to drop a needle) talk during Blend 2019, we thought we could all use another dose of Marlies artistry! So we brought her back also for The Art Department Eindhoven 2019!
